Although we recommend spending a bit more time in Florence to really get a feel for the city, we understand that there is a lot to see in Italy, and 1 day may be all the time that you have. This guide will show you what to do in Florence Italy to get the most out of your day!
Florence, the capital of Italy’s Tuscany region, is a city of art, culture, and history. With its stunning architecture, world-renowned museums, and delicious cuisine, Florence is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Italy.
As you wander through it’s winding cobblestone streets, you’ll quickly see that even the city itself is like a living museum, with beauty at every turn.
In this 1 day itinerary, we’ll explore both the popular and lesser-known experiences that Florence has to offer as well as give you tips and tricks for each stop.
Tips and Tricks: Florence is a very walkable city but most streets are uneven cobblestones so make sure you wear comfortable shoes!
Florence 1 Day Itinerary: City Highlights
On your first day in Florence, we suggest starting by exploring the city’s most popular attractions. Known as “the birthplace of the Renaissance”, Florence houses an impressive art collection, including masterpieces by famous artists such as Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and Botticelli. As you wander through it’s winding cobblestone streets, you’ll quickly see that even the city itself is like a living museum, with beauty at every turn.
Our itinerary not only includes what to do in Florence Italy in one day but also some tips and tricks at each of the must-see sights. We have done the work for you and put them in order according to their location so just follow along and enjoy!
Florence 1 Day Itinerary Stop #1: Galleria dell’Accademia (Accademia Gallery)
The perfect way to start the day is to head over to The Accademia Gallery. It is home to Michelangelo’s famous statue of David, as well as other works by the Renaissance master. We recommend going first thing in the morning to avoid the long lines.
When you finish admiring the David statue follow Via Ricasoli as you head towards the Cathedral of Sant Maria del Fiore, otherwise known as “The Duomo”.
Tip: There is also a copy of the David that you will pass by later in the Itinerary so if you aren’t able to enter, don’t worry, you will still get a glimpse of this beautiful statue!
Florence 1 Day Itinerary Stop #2: Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore
Also known as “the Duomo”, Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, is the most iconic landmark in Florence. Its stunning red-tiled dome is visible from almost every corner of the city. If you are feeling energetic you can climb to the top of the dome for panoramic views of Florence. Just remember it is 463 steps to the top on a narrow winding staircase and there is not elevator access. If you decide you want to save your energy you can also take a stroll around the outside to admire the marble work or head inside to explore the cathedral’s ornate interior.
Continue on following Via Roma towards the Arno River where you will come upon Piazza della Repubblica. This piazza is easily recognized by the historical Carousel located in the piazza.
Florence 1 Day Itinerary Stop #3: Piazza della Repubblica
Piazza della Repubblica is a large square located in the heart of the city and was once the site of the city’s Roman forum, the square has a long and fascinating history. At the center of Piazza della Repubblica stands the impressive triumphal arch, built in 1895 to commemorate the unification of Italy.
Tip: At Piazza della Repubblica you will also find the historic Caffè Gilli, which dates back to 1733. Stop in for a bit of expresso or a macchiato at this historical cafe!
Next, continue on Via Roma towards the river until it changes to Via Calimala. On your right, you will see a small leather market in Piazza del Mercato Nuovo. Our next stop is just to the left if the leather market is on your right and Ponte Vecchio is straight ahead). You can use Palazzo Vecchio as a landmark as it is located in the Piazza of our next stop!
Tip: If you are looking for a little luck, head over to “Il Porcellino”, the wild boar statue in the Piazza del Mercato, to touch its nose. Locals say to put a coin in the mouth of the wild boar and let it fall out. If it falls into the grate, you will solidify your good fortune!
Florence 1 Day Itinerary Stop #4: Piazza della Signoria
In Piazza della Signoria, you’ll find the Palazzo Vecchio, the town hall of Florence, as well as the Loggia dei Lanzi, an open-air sculpture gallery. We highly recommend the maps room in Palazzo Vecchio for anyone who loves to travel!
Tip: On the wall behind the David statue there is a carving in the wall that we like to call “L’importuno di Michelangelo or Michelangelo’s graffiti” There are many legends on how this carving got there. Which one do you believe?
Next pass in front of Palazzo Vecchio and head towards the river. Here you will pass through Piazzale degli Uffizi. Yes, this is the piazza that holds the world-famous Uffizi Museum. If you want to visit the museum, we suggest returning to the museum after lunch when you are well rested as it is a large museum and there is so much to see!
Tip: The Uffizi Museum has 3 floors and is bigger than most people anticipate. We have found that most people enjoy the museum more when they have an expert guide to show them the most famous artwork but also delight them in discovering new and interesting facts about lesser-known pieces.
Just as you are leaving the Piazzale degli Uffizi, you will get your first glimpse of the Arno river. Follow the rivers edge towards Vasari Corridor until you get to our next stop, Ponte Vecchio.
Florence 1 Day Itinerary Stop #5: Ponte Vecchio
Ponte Vecchio is a medieval bridge that spans the Arno River. Its unique architecture and charming shops make it one of the most picturesque spots in Florence. Be sure to check out the “secret” passageway that runs along the top of the bridge. It was once used as a passageway for the Medici family!

Once you pass over Ponte Vecchio, you enter into the area of the city called Oltrarno. Continue straight on Via de’ Guicciardini after you have crossed over the bridge and you will come upon our next stop, Palazzo Pitti.
Florence 1 Day Itinerary Stop #6: Palazzo Pitti
Palazzo Pitti is a massive palace complex that houses several museums and galleries. Highlights include the Palatine Gallery, which features works by Raphael, Titian, and Rubens, and the Boboli Gardens, which we visited on day one.
The Oltrarno area is a little bit less traveled by large tourist groups so it is a great place to stop for lunch. You will find many small restaurants and trattorias in this area. If the weather is nice, we suggest heading over to Piazza Santo Spirito for a table outside in the piazza.
Tip: If you want to sit at a table outside head over to Piazza Santo Spirito where you will find many restaurants with outdoor seating. If you are looking for a quick bit you can also take a pizza to go from Gusta Pizza and sit on the church steps of La Chiesa di Santo Spirito.
After you have renewed your energy with lunch in Oltrarno, we suggest choosing you a museum that you would like to spend some time in. Probably the most well-known is the Uffizi Museum. Here are some of our favorite options:
The Uffizi Gallery
The Uffizi Gallery is one of the world’s most famous art museums, housing an incredible collection of Renaissance masterpieces. From Botticelli’s “The Birth of Venus” to Michelangelo’s “Tondo Doni,” the Uffizi is a must-visit for art lovers. This is a very large museum with 3 floors and thousands of pieces of art. We highly recommend a guide for this museum to help you discover the most famous pieces but also to share the meaning behind these extraordinary works of art!
Bargello Museum
The Bargello Museum is a hidden gem of Florence’s art scene. Housed in a medieval palace, the museum features an incredible collection of sculptures by artists such as Donatello and Michelangelo. This museum has a great mix of paintings, tapestries, and art.
Palazzo Pitti
Palazzo Pitti is a magnificent palace located in Florence, Italy, that was once home to the powerful Medici family. Today, it houses several important museums and galleries, including the Palatine Gallery, the Museum of Costume and Fashion, and the Royal Apartments.
